Slow Play |
| Nothing ruins a good course faster than slow
play. Marshalls & Rangers can and do help and there are some other remedies. You do need to watch the play and see whats happening ....One thing I
have noticed, is paths cannot be underestimated, even under fairways. The sims ride in
carts over paths, but often walk where there are none - sometimes they will go in the
cart, walk, in the cart on the way to a ball....
SNACK BARS SLOW PLAY! If any hole with a backup has a snack bar or soda
vendor - remove them immediately and place them elsewhere......I used to try and put a
snack bar where several tees meet - this is a recipe for disaster.....
Other than those two things, check the course/hole report for average score on a problem
hole, this will give an indication if its how hard the hole is, or whether you just have
wandering sims, etc....
UPDATE: An observation I have discovered when
building a hole with water. ALWAYS have a tile of fairway for player who hit into the
water. A drop area, so to speak. If they drop into rough or a trap, they cannot control
their next shot - this leads to several balls in the drink and an enormous backlog on the
tee.....This is a must in controlling pace of play on water laden holes....!!! |
| Speeding up and slowing down play by Sid Meier
|
| Preventing backups on your golf holes is one of
the challenges of SimGolf. Here are a few ideas you might try... The easiest thing to do is hire a Ranger or Marshall and place him
near the tee.
Be sure you have paths for your golfers to use whenever they're not on a fairway.
Don't place a ballwasher on this hole as it slows play. Also a bench or snackbar
can slow things down, try to place them near a fast hole.
The overall RATE at which golfers arrive at your course is
primarily determined by your FIRST hole. If you think golfers are just arriving to fast
you might try these changes: ADD a ballwasher to the first hole to slow things down. Add
deep rough, water, or sand between the tee and fairway to make golfers take extra time to
get to their second shot. Generally the next pair won't start until the previous pair has
hit their second shots. A little experimentation will show what works on your course. -

| Steep Slope Problem
|
Make a path around the back of the slope,
winding around and gently climbing one height level at a time (any more than one they
complain)......
Put one tile of water and a bridge - no the bridge doesnt go up the slope, but the
golfer do not complain for some reason....they float up to the next level
Make a cliff - they do not complain when climbing a huge cliff but complain about riding a
cart up a path....they float up to the next level
Throw a trap or other hazard on the slope - they do not complain about trudging up a hill
thru a sand trap, but complain about riding a cart up a path laid slope of more than one
height level
*** UPDATE - The next patch is supposed to fix this problem of the cart
riding up slopes complaint. |
Hole
Routing |
| Alot has been expressed about hole routing by the game and how to fix it.
The white line that lays out the hole, sometimes gives a false reading.....Her are some
method to solving that problem. To this date, I have not yet incurred a situation in which
I couldnt fix the hole routing. --- The first alternative is to play with fairway tiles
& Trees. Placing fairway tiles & trees in key places will often fix the hole
routing situation. If it routes to another hole. Place trees in that line around the tee
area, this will usually solve the problem. You can also add fairway tiles the intended
fairway and also remove fairway tiles from the adjacent fairway (usually the fairway tile
where the line makes a bend)...
--- When you cant fix the hole routing by fairway & trees, then the last resort
will ALWAYS work. In this case, delete the tee. You can try and reset the tee in the same
place, but moving it one tile in any direction will solve this problem.
In addition to this, you can often use fairway tiles to manipulate the distance of any
given hole. Often times you can add 30 or more yards to a hole. I set the tee and the
green and then add fairway - watching the hole distance marker - it will change
significantly with elevation and fairway additions. When it gets to a distance I like, I
open the hole to "lock in the distance". At that point, I either pause the game
to finish building (if the hole is far from finished) or keep the game unpaused and tweak
while the golfers play it. Doing it this way, allows me to watch golfers play it as I
tweak and often leads to a well-built hole... |
Hole Variety
- What is it? And How is it determined? |
Sid himself has unvieled the whole
story behind Hole Variety on the official SIMgolf messageboard....!!!There
have been a couple of question about how 'holes with variety' is determined.
Each hole (except the first) is compared with the previous hole and receives a
'variety point' if...
- the par is different.
- the type (heroic, freeway, etc) is different. (in patch 2 CLASSIC holes automatically
get this point)
- the direction is different (North, SouthWest, etc.)
- the straight/dogleg left/dogleg right, is different.
- holes with significant elevation changes recieve a point.
Holes with three or more variety points qualify as a 'hole with
variety' in the
SGA evaluation.

Changing Course Logos |
| Although I have not done this. I do know the
whereabouts of the logos in the game. They are PCX files and if desired could be altered.
The problem is you SHOULD backup this file because once you change the Thistle Runes or
any map, the map will have that logo every time you start a new one....If you wanted to
you could modify this file often to create new ones, etc.....To my limited knowledge, you
cannot change a logo for a specific course, just the map designator itself....If doing a
longterm course project, this wouldnt be problem....Any graphic program should allow you
to access & replace the logo files as you desire.... The files are as follows:
tropdesert.pcx (tropical & desert logos)
parklink.pcx (parklands & link logos)
These files are located in the INTERFACE folder of your SIM
Golf directory....

| Patience is a Virtue in SIMGolf by Don Signori |
| You have just created a great hole. At least you
believe it to be great but that AI is telling you it is only poor or fair. What do you do?
Well I have been making changes when I see it. Wrong move. We should be waiting a year or
preferably 2 years before making 'any' changes. Let several groups of golfers play the
hole. It may very well stay poor or fair. But on the course I'm doing now I was called
away for awhile and left the game running. I was going to tweak a hole I just finished
because it had 2 fairs and one poor category. When I got back those areas had improved to
1 outstanding, 1 very good and 1 good. Next thing that I have read before and just tried
it. If you have a low rating on accuracy or imagination, I have found that most times
changing only one tile in a strategic place can improve the rating oe or two levels. We
also have two fairway tiles. Making use of both on an otherwise bland hole can make things
a bit more challenging. Maybe when we are playing a championship the pros who are out
distancing us on the first shot will land on a section of fairway that causes their ball
to bounce backwards. Or better yet bounce in a well placed water hazard or sand trap. :-).

| Top 100 & Top 18 Hole Awards |
| A hole must be of a reasonable difficulty to rate as
top 100 or top 18. If golfer's comment that 'this hole is too easy' or 'this hole is too
hard' then you'll need to make adjustments. Note that the ball washer is one tool to
reduce the average score on a hole as it improves all golfers accuracy. The tricky green
is a similar tool in increase the scores on a hole. - Sid |
